Oakland Shooting Suspect Is Not Remorseful, Police Chief Says

One Goh, a forty-three year old Asian man, killed seven students in Oakland. He wanted to kill an administrator but once he found out that she wasn’t there he demanded that the adults in the classroom line up. When they wouldn’t cooperate he began shooting them. Goh had been upset at students in the past because they had disrespected and mistreated him. He had behavioral problems and had been asked to leave the school several months earlier.
One Goh’s account for these murders is being offered to all of us. These accounts can’t possibly match our accounting practices as they don’t give him the right to murder these innocent citizens. He also demonstrates no remorse which doesn’t let us make sense of his account.

This article talks about the surge of support that Zimmerman has had in the Trayvon Martin case. How his connections through his lawyer and close ties with the police department have helped shaped the image the case has. This is an example of Zimmerman taking advantage of social capital to help out his public image. Bourdieu described social capital as something that helps someone with their position or relationship within a group or social network. He has used his lawyer to get co-counsel from a much more experienced lawyer and has used his father, who is a judge, in the past to clean his criminal record and delay many proceedings in the current Trayvon Martin case.

6.Miss Universe pageant ends ban on transgender contestants

This article describes the Miss Universe committee changing its rules allowing for transgender people who identify themselves as a female to participate in their beauty pageant. Garfinkel's teaching was based around the idea of breaching. According to this article, the Miss Universe committee has attempted breaching the norm that only those who are born as a female can participate in the pageant, known as breaching the congruency of relevances. This has occurred after the breaching of Jenna Talackova who challenged the norm of wanting to compete in the pageant. In day to day life, Jenna is partaking in the breaching the interchangeability of standpoints since people view her as a female but genetically she is a male.

In Defeat, Santorum Becomes Conservative Champion

Rick Santorum has elected to end his quest for the Republican presidential campaign but has through his efforts revived his political career and emerged as a strong right wing conservative voice. Presidential elections are very much like a play in a theater, candidates spend millions of dollars with the help of hundreds of people to portray certain images of themselves. Erving Goffman’s dramaturgy best describes this democratic process. Each candidate vigorously engages in impression management to gain the support of delegates and the voting population. Their goal is to attain social approval by appealing to the cultural norms and values that define our country. As they give their speeches each candidate is performing on the front stage with the help of a performance team that make them look competent. Whether it’d be the speech writer, the campaign manager, or the political advisor this team puts on a show exhibited to the public and aimed at gaining the public’s support. It is all an act of which we never see the back stage to. Throughout their campaigns these candidates are not only performing and trying to engage in impression management they are also trying to mismanage their opponents’ performance. By attacking ideals or even the other candidate directly their goal is to spoil the identity of the other in order to portray them as incompetent for the position. Rick Santorum put on a good show that did not end quite as he expected but he has now paved the way for Mitt Romney to soak in the spotlight.

    From the perspective of Garfinkel.
A man was beaten, stripped, and robbed in front of alot of people on a busy street. Two stand buyers even got it on tape, yet everyone laughed and no one did anything to help this man. This would be the total opposite of Garfinkels Breaching. Something out of the norm is happening, you would expect people to act deferentially and concerned, yet no one did anything. I feel that if a group of students choose to do a breaching experiment and beat and robbed someone in the group in the middle of Turlington or Plaza of Americas, someone would do something. Someone would stop the kids from treating someone like that. They wouldn't whip out their phones and laugh. I know that if that was happening to me I would want someone to help me out, do anything at all other than stand there and watch and even laugh. I would do that for someone else, yell and tell them to stop or get authority immediately or just do anything at all, I couldn't just stand there and watch, that is breaking a taken for granted rule of humanity. When you see someone in that kind of situation you try to help.

From the point of view of: Luckmann

Apples stocks are at an all time high. The stocks have jumped $150 in just two months time. One could say that from the viewpoint of social theorist Luckmann, Apple has created a sort of institution of itself. An institution can be defined as a large-scale structure defined by its actions and behaviors. If you think about it, more and more people have an Iphone or at the very least an Ipod. It’s become a sort of a norm and in fact is almost out of the normal to not have an I-something. Apple has made a household name for itself and while it seems to be the norm to have an apple product, society itself has created this “norm”. Society today desires the new and upcoming, the newest technologies and the fastest device. Society has become a culture of the bigger and the better and in a sense that is a style of an institution. And while Steve Jobs did an amazing job in the revolution of the mac products society has become a institution full of people glued to their phones. While I commend Jobs for making a product that is a great success, I wonder if his increasing iphone3 to 4 to 4s to now 5 does not just continue to perpetuate the cycle of the society to be an institution of desire?

The fact that Zimmerman’s lawyers have lost contact with him has shocked everyone and could be seen as a form of Garfinkel’s breaching. Everyone that hoped to gain justice for Trayvon are now confused as to what may happen. Some of the followers of this case took Zimmerman remaining in contact with his lawyers for granted and now Zimmerman must be located. Justice should and will be served for Trayvon once Zimmerman has been found!

I chose this article for Goffman. As soon as I read the title it immediately reminded me of his work on Social Stigmas. This article is about the fine line between racial humor and racism. Out of te three forms of stigma Goffman spoke of, this article goes best with association with a particular race. The article spoke specifically about comics using derogative words and the N word in particular. While it may be ok for black comic to use it and not ok for a white comic, some still see it as wrong. Yet, the author talked about a person who felt that it was ok because the black comic is speaking as social commentary and using it to talk about their self. The social stigma attached to these races, and how they are perceived in society directly connect to the jokes the comics tell. I personally don't mind racial jokes but I could understand why people would mind.

This article is about a bride who faked being terminally ill to receive gifts and money to pay for her wedding. The actions of this bride exemplify Garfinkel's idea of breaching. This bride broke the taken-for-granted rules of interaction by conning people in her community into feel sorry for her because of her "terminal" illness. The type of breaching that most relates to this article is: Breaching the congruency of Relevance. It is the idea that we have expectations of others and others have expectations of us,although often times expectations are not the same. For example, those who donated to this bride because they were led to believe she had a terminal illness, expected her to have just that a terminal illness. This was breached when what they expected to be true was a lie, and the bride in fact did not have an illness at all. It is not what they expected. The bride however expected to receive gifts because she knew people would feel sorry for her and give her money if they thought she was dying. According to attorney general Eric T. Schneiderman, by pretending to have a terminal illness, the bride inexcusably took the advantage of the community's hearts and minds, and profited off their generosity. This is not expected of a bride and is an example of breaching between the bride and those she conned.

    http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/santorum-surrenders-romney-capitalize

With Santorum gone out of the Republican nominee picture, Mitt Romney and his campaign can fine tune his impression management even more. Over the past several months, Romney’s team and their Super PAC supporters have used various forms of media and public speaking opportunities to construct Romney’s conservative image while simultaneously slashing his opponents. Now with the Republic nomination all but secured, Romney is now focusing on how to come off as the right candidate for the job. Although Romney has not convinced many Republican candidates that he is a “true conservative”, he has not faltered nearly as bad as he did in 2008 when he tried to give off the impression he was all things to all voters. Granted he has been accused of doing that this campaign, but then again which candidate hasn’t? Now beginning to concentrate his campaign on beating Obama, the Romney camp will try to present a Romney that has strong conservative views to solidify his party’s trust while still coming across to moderates as a viable candidate. What will make or break Romney’s campaign is how well he can control his impression management towards his audience and be seen as a competent, conservative voice.

    6. http://www.cnn.com/2012/04/10/justice/teacher-fbi-top-ten/index.html?iref=obnetwork

In this article, Goffman’s social stigma is exemplified as a recent graduate from Purdue University was hired at a Washington DC school and the administration found out that he had child pornography in his camera and was part of the production of child pornography. This is seen as a controversy because Eric Justin Toth is a young man, with great social skills and good appearance, whom others would never think he is a sickening man involved in the use and production of child pornography.

Now the FBI has put him on the list for most dangerous individuals in the world, the same list where Osama Bin Laden is currently in, and is offering $100,000 to anyone who is able to give the FBI information about his location. An FBI Supervisory Special Agent states, “There is no comparison to be made between Toth and bin Laden. Although Eric Toth has not murdered anyone and he is not an international terrorist, that does not mean he isn't dangerous."

Eric Toth does not face the stigma of dealing with child pornography due to his physical characteristics or his group identity. His stigma is imposed on his character traits. Nonetheless, because of this, his stigma is descritable because anyone who meets him will not know that he is involved in child pornography and is declared as one of the most dangerous man in the world. This stigma is least prominent in jail, where he would be found with other child sex offenders, but is least prominent in any public setting. Therefore, this is the reason that he is a very dangerous man to the nation. His stigma still allows him to get away with his illegal actions. Currently, the FBI is worried because he has traveled to Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Arizona in less than a year, and perhaps, he could be living in the city of Gainesville now. Who knows.

    6. http://www.cnn.com/2012/04/11/opinion/granderson-violence-race/index.html?hpt=hp_c3

With the recent media coverage surrounding the murder of Trayvon Martin, the issue has been transformed into one of racism, not murder. As is noted in the article, "hate crimes" have escalated across the US in the past few months and the blame is overwhelmingly being placed on racist thinking. This process certainly echoes Berger and Luckmann's theory on how institutions are formed. The violence that is seen in our everyday lives between different races stems from a sociological standpoint. It would be foolish to argue that racism did not exist in our country's history; in fact, it was a crucial aspect of American society. Unfortunately, despite the advances humankind has made in recent years, shreds of this racism still exist, as racism has been transformed into an institution. Individual occurences, rather than being thought of as "this is happening again" have now become "this is how things are done." In short, the way we act, and have acted, forms habits which others respond to and adopt, and institutions-negative or positive-emerge. This article, in accordance with Berger and Luckmann's paradox, asserts that while we are affected by institutions, we also simultaneously create them. In that way, violence and hate crimes are, without a doubt, a two-way street.

    6.http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2012/04/rick_santorum_leaves_the_race_mitt_romney_had_already_won_.html

The process through which political parties select their candidates is a perfect example of institutionalization. The development of certain early primaries as all important indicators of a candidates potential and the tendency in the media to make a huge deal over early results and any small indicator of a candidate “pulling ahead” have evolved from the simple desire to report important political news regardless of whether there is any into major factors in which candidate gains the party nomination. Rick Santorum pulling out of the race, as this article suggests, is the result of his desire not to ruin his reputation within the party by hurting Romney’s chances at the presidency. The Republican Party encourages this type of behavior through its own set of institutions which reward candidates who act in the best interest of the party with positions within the party as well as access to funding.

Title: Santos Laguna player poses with small child and the Playboy magazine he just bought

    URL: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/soccer-dirty-tackle/santos-laguna-player-poses-small-child-playboy-magazine-192930767.html

From the perspective of Harold Garfinkel, we breach society when we change or redefine the reality or make the interaction come to a confusing halt. This article points out that a famous athlete, Santos Laguna defender Felipe Baloy, poses with a young fan while failing to cover his newest edition of the playboy appearing through a clear plastic bag. Society doesn’t have a problem with him choosing to purchase playboy, however, it is expected that in front of children of certain ages, it will not be visible. He was more than excited to pose for his young fan, and as the article expresses, yes, he may not have caused any harm, but it was not an appropriate picture that a child his age should look back on, at least till he is of age. Society would not want to change the way we expect children to reach certain ages before viewing certain object/people. This famous player breached society because it stood out of the norm of what should have taken place. This player should have put his bag down snapped the picture, then later picked up his belongings and continued.

This article is giving an update on a very controversial story involving a young African American man named Trayvon Martin. Trayvon Martin was allegedly walking home from the store carrying a container of Arizona iced tea and a bag of skittles while wearing a hoodie. George Zimmerman found this to be suspicious so he preceded to follow Trayvon for a couple of minutes. Zimmerman claimed that he was felt threatened and shot Trayvon and ultimately killing him. Zimmerman was supposedly part of the neighborhood crime watch and felt that he did the right thing. This incident happened 40 days ago and Zimmerman still has not been charged for Trayvon’s death. Zimmerman’s story is quickly unraveling. There have been multiple rallies and protests in support of Trayvon and his family to get the justice that they deserve. Now after so much media attention, Zimmerman is set to be charged for the murder of Trayvon Martin.

This article represents one of the three things that Berger and Luckman said to avoid: reification. Zimmerman was just perpetuating the stereotype of a young black man wearing a hoodie could not be trusted. He automatically associated a lot of bad characteristics to Trayvon without thinking critically. He treated the way that Trayvon was dressed as if it completely defined Trayvon and gave him the ‘right’ to ‘protect’ himself. Zimmerman’s actions were based on negative stereotypes of African American males. He was thinking that they were violent and needed to be cautious around them. According to Berger and Luckman, humans are affected by institutions, but also are simultaneously creating those institutions. Zimmerman created his own form of justice probably as a result of a negative experience with someone who just happened to be African American. This could have formed the negative stereotypes within his mind which led him to take Trayvon Martin’s life.

Trayvon Martin: George Zimmerman 'to be charged'
    BBC News Staff
    BBC News

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-17684422
    Garfinkel Perspective

The unfortunate events surrounding the death of Trayvon Martin were filled with incidents of breaching. On a warm spring day Trayvon Martin was headed to the store to purchase a few items. It was odd to be wearing a white hoodie on a warm day walking. This incident of breaching and breaking the norms could’ve led to unforeseen circumstances. When breaching occurs people react in different ways but mainly out of confusion anger and discomfort. This breaching event could be described as interchangeability of standpoints. George Zimmerman could’ve perceived Trayvon as “gangbanger” up to no good because of his appearance and physical characteristics and decide to take matters into his own hands. This breaching event is also considered breaching the grasp of what everyone knows to be correct. From another standpoint there was a breach from the law enforcement side. Typically when someone is shot there is an investigation and charges filed. In this case there wasn’t until the general population had an uproar about this incident. The breaching was on behalf of the law enforcements and the response was anger and concern in an effort to correct this breaching.
