This article exhibits Parsons theory of structural functionalism at its best. The administration of Whitby had to get together and come up to the conclusion that there was a problem with the weight and/or eating styles of their diabetic patients. Then there were people designated to choose what changes needed to made. There was a need for people who could then set up a better diet and prepare it for the patients. There had to be people chosen to sit down and talk with patients and patients had to either consent or not consent to the new diet. All these people had to work together to be able to implement a healthier diet for the patients at Whitby facility.

The recent events in Afghanistan as depicted by the article portray the structures of society and their functional significance for other structures. Talcott Parson’s Structural Functionalism is best suited to explain how the military trains soldiers for rigid roles and how these roles varying by ranking work together to carry out successful operations that are attempts to reach a resolution, often times peace. The structure that has become the war exhibits the social interaction and persistent social relationships among Americans and Afghans while the function of the war has led to increased security in Taliban areas and support of foreign allies. The military, the operations they carry out, the Afghan people and even the Taliban have a role in developing the war and guiding its course of action in order to have a functional significance on the government. With the adaptation of the Afghan people to a more democratic society, the goal defined and established by American troops of democracy, the integration of insurgents back into society as law abiding citizens, and the latency the new ideals hope to maintain all work together in order for the systems involved to be able to meet their needs. Unfortunately the recent killing of Afghan civilians by the American soldier serves only to make this system dysfunctional.

This article exhibits Parson's idea of structural functionalism. In the article Ray Kurzweil an author, explains that as technology evolves and advances so will humans and computers will soon become humans. Over time we have seen the advancement of technology, dating back to Alexander Graham Bell's invention of the telephone to now cordless phones, from beepers to large portable cellphones, to smart phones, to thin/lighter phones, from large desktop computers, to laptops, to ipads and the list goes on. This is connected to Parson's idea that all parts work together to make a whole and all the parts that work together therefore influence each other. The author makes an important point that is related to Parson's idea of structural functionalism: "you can start world-changing revolution with the power of your ideas and the tools that everyone has. A kid in Africa has access to more information than the president of the United States did 15 years ago." Technology builds on each other. I think that Parson would agree that in terms of technology, all the aspects of technology continues to evolve because creative minds work together to influence the advancement of technology and technology will continue to exist and therefore serves a purpose in society. I agree that with the advancement of technology, one day computers will be accepted as humans based on how far we have come with technology.

This article can be looked at from the perspective of Parsons structural functionalism. The largest financial firms in our country are prepared for another recession. Families, individuals, small businesses, large corporations, etc. all have to rely on the service and security of a financial firm when it comes to dealing with their money, and without money those people are not able to function and survive in this country. We rely very heavily on banks and they rely on their customers, both small individual accounts and large corporations accounts. without each other the other doesn't exist.

The article is much like Poppers logical positivism because when things get stuck in our minds it is typically due to a repetition pattern which is much like the natural science or the truth /meaning stamen that Popper made. He emphasizes on predictability. It is highly predicable that if you here a song 30,40 or 100 times over again it is very predictable to become stuck in our minds. Popper states if there is a cause there is an effect. Well when thinking about this article it states that songs stir up emotions, memory triggers, or stress form people and that is also why things become set in out minds, so in other words I feel it is saying if there is a cause that will be the effect. Popper’s idea was that if you could not see it or touch something it must not be real in regards to philosophy and religion. He wanted to be able to prove that something would occur if x happened first. Well, I think if a child sings a song 100 times over it is predicable that it will become embedded in one’s head and that is verifiable.

I believe this article has a lot to do with Parson's structural functionalist viewpoint. The Encyclopedia Britannica has decided that it with no longer republish its print editions every two years and will focus solely on its electronic products. This is an example where something (print encyclopedias) fills no role in society and has little to no impact on anyone. As societies evolve, structures change accordingly to best suit its needs. The Encyclopedia Britannica isn't dead or hasn't stopped fulfilling its role, it has just changed the form this service takes. In addition, the company is relaunching their site in include more social networking connections in order to make the information more accessible and is actually facilitating the spread of its knowledge even more so.

This article exemplifies structural functionalism's idea based off of Parsons that if negative events happen for a prolonged period of time they have a purpose. Vehicle crashes happen every few seconds. Crashes can serve the purpose of creating a need for safer vehicles and also forces people to buy new vehicles. Car crashes seem to be inevitable around the globe and have become a necessary evil for society as shown from an economic perspective.

Killings a Blow to U.S. strategy in Afghanistan

The civilian killings in Afghanistan allegedly by a U.S. soldier are a demonstration of how social system functions may be affected by other structures within the social system. In the United States military occupation in Afghanistan, there are a variety of roles that keep the whole of the societal organism known as war going. Soldiers are trained and follow strict regiments, commanders give orders, and the Taliban are uprooted (however they often re-locate and train themselves again) all in the effort to bring stability into the region and help setup a functioning government. A commander was quoted as saying “better security would lead to schools, clinics and fewer young men joining the Taliban.” The maintenance of Afghan society would be first instituted by U.S. forces and later be carried out by their cooperating Afghan counterparts with the idea being that slowly democratic styles of government and ways of life will be implemented into Afghan culture. However, with the accusation of murder by a U.S. solider, this entire process may be undermined. Although increased stability may well be from U.S. operations, the true continuation of such systems must be taken on by the people. When the local population loses trust for the U.S., who are seen by large segments of the population as little more than occupiers and murders, there stands a huge problem that must be addressed. The Taliban will surely use this opportunity to further extend their stance that U.S. forces are devils that must be fought against. If the U.S. and ultimately Afghanistan wants the population to become integrated with more Western democratic values, such allegations are surely not the way to go. Many are already distrusting of outsiders and with the possibility of innocent civilians being murdered, their reasoning does not go unwarranted. In order for a latency period to occur, both the U.S. and Afghanistan officials must cooperate in doing everything within their power to control such threats to the stability of the new cultural system being enacting inside their borders.

Parsons theory of Structural Functionalism is greatly depicted in this article. When it comes to having a healthy business, it takes lots of work to see that business success come to past. Mr. Makowner explains that companies need healthy cities to provide reliable infrastructure, an educated and vital workforce, a vibrant economy, and a safe and secure environment to survive and thrive. Without these vital components, a business/company can and more than likely will collapse before it even has the opportunity to flourish. In order for each of the aspects listed above to come to past, someone has to delegate to search for a great city, while another look at the city’s success rates in businesses, as another check on crime rates, while another research the educational attainment of most individuals in the area. When you bring the small areas and research together, the whole of a successful business is well on the way and can flourish for a great amount of time. We don’t see a business just magically appear and succeed, the work before it appears to others are what cause the business to come alive and rise to success. Various people in various areas and assignments work separately yet for one cause to see overall success.

The awareness of the Joseph Koney and the effects that he has had over Uganda over the past several years have become the number topic across the American merely over a couple of days after the video that a film maker produced went viral. The success of awareness and actions taken to increase the awareness and actions taken to aid this situation can be related to Parson’s structural functionalism. The film maker and the other members of Invisible children can be seen as the personality system. The defined that the goal was to increase awareness and actions taken to hinder Koney from engaging in the human crimes that he have been performing, thus creating the video on Koney and giving speeches across the nation. The social system is comprised of all the people that had been exposed to either the video or speeches that the film maker, his coworkers or even the testimonies given by some of the African members that had firsthand experience with Joseph Koney. The people that became knowledgeable performed the integrative function by creating communities of activists. These people maintained the pattern of awareness by lobbying, which is a big part of our cultural system in getting our voice heard. The media also played part of the cultural system in maintaining the function. Finally the government can be seen as the behavioral organism because they perform the adaptive functions in response to what the people was voicing by sending in troops on two occasions to help the Ugandan government to capture Joseph Koney. In conclusion, it took an individual to create a group and community to increase awareness to the nation, which then voiced their concern by educating, lobbying, and gaining media attention in order for our government to take action in aiding the mission to capture warlord Joseph Koney.

    6. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/11/business/college-costs-are-rising-amid-a-prestige-chase.html?_r=1&ref=education

The article is about how many colleges across the United States are raising their tuition and increasing teacher salaries in order to obtain prestige. This is causing a problem because more of the taxpayers’ money is being funneled into this pursuit of prestige. According to Parson’s theory of action, we are moving usually moving from the expressive and ascriptive towards the instrumental achievements because we move from home to school to job world. College is supposed to give people an advantage when entering the real world but with the continuous tuition growth, this may make it difficult for everyone to have the same access to these opportunities. The government is looking to curb these tuition increases while still keeping in mind that the college education is what gives Americans that competitive edge. This shows how each structure can be sustained only through its dependence on other structures. The government relies on the education system (in this case, college) to produce intelligent members of society who can contribute positively. And in turn, the education system (primarily public schools) relies on the government to provide the needed funds to continue to educate the future generations.

When reading this article, Parsons Action theory came to mind specifically because this event that occurred was a very tragic one. How the parents, teachers, Bishop, Bus Company, the people of those countries reacted to this situation could be used to apply this theory. People’s purpose and ideals to help determine the actions they take. Whether those actions involve crying, screaming, shock, trauma, irrational actions, fighting, stress, anger, sadness, and any other possible actions a person could take. Do the parents of the dead children blame the dead bus drives? Or maybe the Bus Company and sue them? But it will depend on the everyone’s purpose and ideals behind their actions that will determine the actions they take.
